(Translation : “Clean your room”, “Brush your teeth”, “Put your shoes on!”)

l’impératif présent is also used for recipes, directions like an itinerary or instructions at school, giving orders or advice at work .

L’impératif passé is mostly used to talk about an order that must be respected before a specific action. For example: « Aie fini tes devoirs avant de regarder la télé !»

(Translation : “Finish your homework before watching TV!” )

How to form the imperative in French?

To conjugate this mode, it is necessary to distinguish between the present and the past.

For both tenses, l’impératif is only used with: 2nd person singular (TU), 1st and 2nd person  plural (NOUS and VOUS).

L’impératif présent

  • The verbs of the 1st group are conjugated in the present tense (présent de l’indicatif), but without the S in the 2nd person (TU) and without putting before the verb – TU, NOUS and VOUS.

Examples for the present tense:

  1. Tu manges ton déjeuner.
  2. Nous finissons nos devoirs.
  3. Vous parlez moins fort.

  2. Avoir : aie, ayons, ayez

L’impératif négatif

This is constructed like the negation in the present tense: ne/n’ + verb +  pas
