For students whose native languages \u200b\u200bare not Latin, it&rsquo;s a bit more complicated &#8230; That&rsquo;s why it seems appropriate to write a mini-course on this subject, to try to answer to your doubts . <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Review : pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9 or imparfait <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9 ? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9 is a tense of the past of the indicative mode. It express a <strong>short action finished<\/strong> in the past. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Construction<\/strong> : auxiliaire \u00eatre or avoir in present tense + participe pass\u00e9 of the verb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples : J&rsquo;ai mang\u00e9. <em>I ate<\/em> \/ J&rsquo;ai fini. <em>I finished<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9 is used in the following cases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To speak about a punctual event of the past. Example: J&rsquo;ai obtenu mon permis de conduire en 2006. &gt;  <em>I obtained my driver&rsquo;s license in 2006. <\/em><\/li><li>To comment a succession of events. Example: J&rsquo;ai lu l&#8217;email du client, j&rsquo;ai r\u00e9pondu au client et je l&rsquo;ai appel\u00e9. &gt; <em>I read the client&rsquo;s email, then I answered the client and called him. <\/em><\/li><li>To tell about a limited event in the time. Example: J&rsquo;ai \u00e9tudi\u00e9 pendant 5 ans pour \u00eatre professeure de fran\u00e7ais. &gt; <em>I studied to be a French teacher for 5 years. <\/em><\/li><li>To speak about repeated actions. Example: J&rsquo;ai post\u00e9 des contenus sur Instagram et sur Facebook tous les jours. &gt; <em>I posted content on Instagram and Facebook every day.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the imparfait? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The imparfait is a tense of the past of the indicative mode. It <strong>describe and tell about habits<\/strong> in the past.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Construction<\/strong> : radical of the verb at \u00ab\u00a0nous\u00a0\u00bb in present tense + terminaisons AIS \/ AIS \/ AIT \/ IONS \/ IEZ \/ AIENT<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Examples : Nous mangeons (pr\u00e9sent) &gt; je mangeais (imparfait). <em>I ate<\/em> <em>or I was eating<\/em> \/ Nous finissons (pr\u00e9sent) &gt; je finissais (imparfait). <em>I finished or I was finishing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The imparfait is used in the following cases.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To talk about an action going on in the past. Example: En 2000, je vivais encore en France. &gt;<em> In 2000, I was still living in France. <\/em><\/li><li>To comment on the setting, the circumstance of a punctual event. Example: Quand j&rsquo;\u00e9tais en Master, j&rsquo;ai eu deux enfants. &gt; <em>When I was in Master, I had two children. <\/em><\/li><li>To tell habits in the past. Example: Chaque ann\u00e9e, j&rsquo;allais en vacances en Normandie. &gt; <em>Every year, I went on holiday in Normandy. <\/em><\/li><li>To describe in the past. Example: C&rsquo;\u00e9tait une journ\u00e9e magnifique. &gt; <em>It was a beautiful day.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9 versus imparfait <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to place in a time line the pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9 and the imparfait? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify wp-block-paragraph\">When I am teaching French in class, I like to show this graphic that shows a timeline. It is clear that <strong>the pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9 interrupts the imparfait<\/strong>.
